Design and production of a 1kW Fuel Cell Test Bench

IFPEN is currently developing PEMFC fuel cell models for mobility applications. These models aim, in particular, to represent the behavior of the cells, especially during aging. The development of these models requires a good knowledge of the phenomena involved and the influence of a large number of parameters. For example, the study of the heterogeneity of the phenomena at the surface of the electrodes of a cell and between the cells of a stack is a crucial point.
This 1 kW stack bench should enable IFPEN to have its own test facilities to understand the electrochemical phenomena to be transcribed into the model and to generate the data necessary for their calibration. However, these data are not easily accessible in the literature or via tests on the PàC 210 kW system bench, which is designed to test commercial stack+BoP systems that cannot be instrumented at the stack level.

The objective is to test a short fuel cell stack of the PEMFC type (stack of up to 10 cells with a surface area of 10 to 100 cm²) with a power output between 100 and 800-1000 W. The operating conditions are represented in the ideal case of pure gases or real mixtures of incoming humidified gases, possibly with a known quantity of a poison gas. The test bench will have a maximal footprint of 1.5x1.5 m².

The design of the bench must therefore allow the correct operation of the stack with the following functions:
- Supply of pure gas of controlled composition (Air, N2/O2 mixture and H2/N2), and subsequent installation of a gas mixing device to be able to test the impact of poisons (typically CO, H2S) in the incoming gases,
- Control of the humidification rate of these feed gases,
- Control of the gas pressure,
- Measurement and control of incoming gas flows rate,
- Preheating of gas,
- Temperature control and stack cooling,
- Dissipation of the electrical energy generated by the cell,
- Determination of potentials and currents on the whole stack, on each cell of the stack,
- Determination of the electrochemical impedances on each cell.
The system will be connected by electrical and fluidic circuits and controlled by a HMI. A diagram is proposed on figure 2a. Figure 2b represents an example of an integrated bench allowing the functions of temperature, flow, pressure and load control of a fuel cell. The generation of hydrogen, the supply of gases and the supply of a stack are not integrated in the purchase of such a bench.
