ERA 2015 04 OP 'Studies on evolution of railway radio communication'

European Railway Agency

The ERTMS, the train signalling and traffic management system for Europe, is enabling interoperability throughout the European rail network. It is a major industrial project being implemented by the European Union — a project which will serve to make rail transport safer and more competitive; an 'enabling' technology to allow exploitation of new business opportunities, operational improvements and efficiency streamlining. Evolutionary capability should be 'built-in' the system; it must not become a constraint or a barrier. The renewal cycles in the telecommunications industry are much shorter than those of railway signalling and this needs to be correctly managed in order to allow the adaptation of radio communications to advances available on the market. The European Railway Agency, in its role as system authority for the ERTMS, must establish a transparent process to manage the system changes. Representative organisations of the railway sector cooperate with the ERA in order to achieve the objectives of the European Union for the development of railway transport.
Scope of work will include:
1. feasibility studies; 2. technical and operational assessment; 3. economic assessment; 4. analysis of interoperability on different line categories, impact on technical assessment and certification.
